Toronto’s medical community was joined by the business and social elite as well as celebrities like Hilary Farr (host of Love It or List It), to support this worthy cause.  Hosted by Mary Kitchen, Entertainment Anchor for CityNews, the night was full of pampering, culinary delights as well as plentiful surprises.  From the Burt’s Bees massages and Mombacho Cigars to the decadent hors d’oeuvres to the surprise concert by Shawn Desman to the flower cookies to the aerial performance to the raffle and silent auction to the non-stop groovin’ by DJ Floh Back Productions.

This was truly a night for fashionistas as all gathered together in their sexiest and sassiest outfits for this year’s cocktail party.  The event began with a VIP reception but quickly transitioned to a very happening party full of adventurous, trendy partygoers.  As guests mingled, aerial performances and some unexpected characters made an appearance. The biggest thrill came when Shawn Desman performed a high energy concert that really revved up the crowd.

The décor was very well thought out with the photo booth being a rose wall and the dessert being flower sugar cookies in all colours, just like a rose garden.

Over the past decade, over $1.7 million has been raised by Scrubs to support the the highest priority needs at The Hospital for Sick Children. This year’s proceeds went to The Urgent Care Unit.

Spinal Health

November 18th, 2011
Dr. Tony Van Hoof

Had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Tony Van Hoof of the Mount Dennis Family Clinic at the National Women’s Show.

A formal hockey player, a renowned chiropractor, and all around nice guy, Tony is passionate about spinal health and how good posture is key to enabling the central nervous system to work optimally.

At the National Women’s Show, the various Women’s Health and Chiropractic booths “cheek” your neck health with a scanner.

Thermal Scanner

Thermal Scanner

The technician scrolls the thermal scan gently up your spine to take specific readings that measure “temperature differences from one side of the spine to the other.” This test shows “where the Autonomic Nerve System, which is responsible for controlling the blood vessels going to organs and glands, might be under stress.”

Surface EMG/Electromyography Scan

The scan which is painless shows the “imbalances by measuring the amount of current/energy used from side to side of our spine, looking at symmetry, pattern and the intensity of the signal.”

Subluxation is when one or more of the vertebra in the spine is out of position, putting pressure on nerves causing nerve interference.

Nerve interference interrupts the body’s functions and its natural ability to heal.

nerve-function-subluxation-chartIt’s important to get one’s neck and spine check through X-Rays for an accurate telling.

Ideally, the angel of one’s neck should be 42 degrees.

With poor posture, however, over time, it becomes straighter and thus, like straightening a banana, it can be very vulnerable and the messages from the brain to the central nervous system, restricted.

Since only 10% of the nervous system responds to pain, it is very easy to have Subluxation and not even know it!

If there is Subluxation, then it can be very useful to have an “adjustment,” which is done to “correct vertebral subluxation and remove nerve interference.” There are many types of techniques, but generally an adjustment is a “specific application of force addressing a specific vertebra.” Sometimes, this force releases a “popping” sound from the joints “from the pressure that accumulates in the joint when it is subluxated.”  It is typically painless and take about 5 minutes to do.  Most courses of treatment range from 3 months to 5 years, generally 2-3 times a week, but generally have concrete results that can be measured on the X-Rays!

Dr. Tony is very big on educating people about their spinal health.  He also mentioned that chiropractic care has been key to restoring Sidney Crosby to the ice following his concussion and has helped numerous babies (and adults) with ear infections, headaches and a whole host of problems one might never have connected to spinal health.

Since spinal health means central nervous system optimization, it’s important to get checked.  The sooner the better, so you can be helped and live the healthiest possible life!
